With its unique, fan-shaped leaves that turn a brilliant yellow color in the fall, the Ginkgo tree is sure to make your landscape stand out! This “living fossil,” is undoubtedly one of the most distinct and beautiful of all deciduous trees and can be found in botanical gardens all around. It has been around for over 200 million years and is one of the oldest living trees on earth. Also known as the Maidenhair tree, or Ginkgo Biloba scientifically, it is the only living species in the division Ginkgophyta – all others being extinct. It was named the maidenhair tree because of the ginkgo tree leaves’ visual appearance to the Maidenhair fern. You’ll be fascinated by its tall, rounded form and delicately shaped leaves. These large trees can either be male or female. Male trees produce no fruit but release pollen to be cross pollinated by the wind with female trees. The female ginkgo produces the fruit/seed which they are known for. The sexual identity of the tree is not known until it reaches 20 years of growth unless it is grafted. All Ginkgo Biloba trees sold by Perfect Plants are grafted male varieties. Blooming in the late spring, the Ginkgo establishes a strong root system easily. In the fall, the Gingko’s bright green leaves will be the first to turn an almost fluorescent yellow to autumn gold. It has beautiful yellow fall color and will turn heads as a street tree for others to enjoy! Later in the season, the bright yellow leaves will fall to the ground.
